Should Men Use Different Skincare Products Than Women?

While the market for women’s skin care products costs billions of dollars, the value for men's skincare products has also reached nearly 25-30 billion dollars. The question whether there really is a need for different skin care products for both genders is necessary, rests on the differences between their skins. The real questions in whether men and women really have different skin physiologies. In order to understand this we must learn more about our skin.

The skin is made up of three different layers; the sub cutis fatty layer, dermis and the outer most layer is the epidermis. This last layer of our epidermis is called the Stratum Corneum, which is what all the skin care products we use on our skin benefit.

Different pH levels

Secretions from our skin’s oil producing glands and sweat glands make up something called an acid mantle on the outermost part of our skin. This acid mantle is what determines the pH level of our skin. Scientists have found that men have more acidic skin as compared to a women's. Therefore, it is more important for women to use moisturizing products to keep their skins healthy and hydrated.  This does not mean men can only use men's product, always remember that men and women are the same type and men can always use products that women used.

Acid Mantle

This different in acid mantle between men and women makes women's skin more susceptible to ageing and damage. Since women have a more alkaline pH level, their skin is more likely to age faster. The level of elasticity and collagen in women's skin starts to shrink as we age, both for men and women, but earlier in women.

Women has to start earlier then Men

In order to maintain the moisture of the skin, it's important for women to start using moisturizing and anti-ageing creams as early as their 20’s. Creams like Cleomee Moisture Repair Cream (Donkey Milk), It's Skin PRESTIGE Creme D'escargot (Snail Perfect Crystal Diamond Creme) and Ben & Sera 30 days Anti-Aging Coating Cream (Whitening/Moist/Elastic/Anti-wrinkle/Smoothness) all contain ingredients to prevent wrinkles and provide skin with the moisture it needs.

Dry or Oily Skin

The difference in hormones between men and women is also a reason that can mean they need to use different creams. Men have more androgens in their bodies which makes their skin oilier, but as they age their dropping levels of testosterone means their skin gets drier with age.  This means men has a bigger fluctuation to go from oily skin to dry skin when aging.

Use different products at different age

Oily skin requires an oil free and an anti-clogging moisturizer whereas dry skin requires a petroleum based moisturizer or one with glycerin or Shea butter. Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Moisture Watery Cream (dry skin type) is for dry skin whereas the Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Fresh Watery Cream (Oily skin type) is for oily skin. Both these creams contain ingredients that are included specifically to suit each skin type.

Fragrance Free

Dermatologists have concluded that it's best to apply moisturizers that are fragrance free, because they are less likely to irritate the skin. Fragrance is one of the most significant differences between moisturizers for men and women. Therefore, when fragrance is eliminated, both the genders will be able to use the same types of creams, depending on their skin type.

Serums and Products from Ben & Sera are strongly recommended here because they are colorless, transparent, slightly viscous fluid!!

Additionally, it is also very important to use a moisturizer with an SPF to avoid sun damage. Using a fragrance free, pH balanced lotion with at least an SPF 15 is a must for both men and women. The Innisfree Eco Safety Perfect Sunblock SPF50 contains as much as SPF 50 is suitable for moisturizing and prevents sun damage.

Hence, the difference between men and women skin may be significant, but it does not necessitate differentiating products between men and women as much as it does between their varying skin types.
